While Apple is focusing on services in 2019 (and beyond), the company is still going to launch new iPhones this year.
The 2019 iPhone lineup doesn’t have a name yet, even out of the rumor mill, surprisingly enough. But we are starting to hear quite a bit about the device lineup’s upcoming features. One of the most recurring rumors at this point is support for what’s called “bilateral charging”, or reverse wireless charging. This means that, if the rumors are true, you’ll be able to put a device that supports wireless charging on the back of a 2019 iPhone to charge it.
Indeed, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said as much last month, and now he’s back, reiterating that point in the latest investor’s note. Kuo expects that the 5.8-inch iPhone XS successor, the 6.1-inch iPhone XR follow-up, and the 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max’s sequel will all support bilateral wireless charging.
To make this a reality, Apple will reportedly upsizing the battery size in all three models this year. The 5.8-inch iPhone battery’s size will reportedly increase between 20 and 25 percent when compared to the current model. The 6.5-inch iPhone’s battery is said to get boosted by 10 to 15 percent. However, the 6.1-inch iPhone model will see a significantly smaller boost between 0 and 5 percent.
Our Take
Unless this is another AirPower situation, this new feature is probably safe bet for the 2019 iPhone lineup. Samsung introduced the same feature earlier this year with the Galaxy S10 lineup, and Samsung wasn’t even the first to do it for Android smartphones. It would also be a welcomed addition, now that AirPower is cancelled.
